The 3rd annual North Country Draft Horse Breeders` Sale was held on Sunday, October 26, 2008, in conjunction with the Wheat City Stampede and Horse Expo at the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba. The sale included a good offering of weanling Belgian, Percheron, Clydesdale and crossbred foals, as well as several mature and broke horses.

There were 45 lots sold, with the top ten foals bringing an average of $1,025. The high selling foal was a Belgian stud colt consigned by MM Ranch, Curt & Clint Paton of Carnduff, Saskatchewan and purchased by Peeco`s Ranch, Trent Peel of Miniota, Manitoba for $1,200.

Sale toppers in each breed were as follows:

Lot 60 Belgian filly - Peeco`s Hermoine consigned by Peeco`s Belgians, Blaine & Tracey Peel, Miniota, MB sold to Logan Dew, Windthorst, SK for $975.

Lot 58 Belgian colt - Paton`s Pharoah`s Kaden consigned by Paton Bros., Curt & Clint Paton, Carnduff, SK sold to Trent Peel, Miniota, MB for $1200.

Lots 46 and 47 Clydesdale fillies - Boulder Bluff Macey and Boulder Bluff Destiny consigned by Boulder Bluff Clydesdales, Blaine & Trinda Martin, Strathclair, MB sold to Murray Turner, Souris, MB for $1025 each.

Lot# 33 Percheron filly - Lone Oak 08 Jane consigned by Lone Oak Percherons, Jim & Darlene Lane, Birtle, MB sold to Logan Dew, Windthorst, SK, for $1100.

Lot 39 Percheron colt - Lone Oak 08 Jack consigned by Lone Oak Percherons, Jim & Darlene Lane, Birtle, MB and sold to Blair Bickford, Moose Jaw, SK for $1150.

Lot 66 and 67 team of Percheron x QH mares consigned by Royston Farm, Richard Witty, Russell, MB and sold for $3500.

Overall, the organizing committee was pleased with the outcome of the sale considering the year and the current market status.

"We were satisfied with the prices we got on our foals, and happy with the sale considering the economic times," said Jim Lane of Lone Oak Percherons, owner of the two high selling Percheron weanlings.

The feeling was echoed by Curt Paton of MM Ranch, owner of the high selling colt. "Horse sales are struggling this year, so I am really pleased with how we did. We sold a good herd sire prospect that will go to another breeder in the business."

Equine ranchers brought out some of their best of this year`s foal crop to offer to the buying public. This venue provides a perfect opportunity to showcase what this area has to offer the draft horse industry. And because it is held in conjunction with the Horse Expo, which this year also included the Manitoba Draft Foal Jackpot, it only broadens the range of folks this sale is geared towards reaching.

Currently, the North Country Breeders membership consists of 29 equine ranchers, members of the North American Equine Ranching Information Council (NAERIC), with half of them consigning horses to this year`s sale. The committee heading up the sale includes chair Blaine Peel, of Miniota, MB, as well as Jim Lane, Birtle, MB, Lyle Brown, Lenore, MB, and Wade Joorisity, Kipling, SK. Ross Taylor Auctions of Melita, MB provided the auction services, and Don Jeremy was in charge of pedigrees.
