| Results of the 2nd Annual NAERIC Barrel$ of Ca$h Prospect Sale | | 11/12/2009 | | | The 2009 NAERIC Barrels of Cash Prospect Sale was held in the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba on Friday, October 23, 2009. This was the second annual sale, held in conjunction with the Wheat City Stampede, and it attracted a large crowd.
There were 70 bidders registered from North Dakota, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Buyers purchased 40 weanlings, consigned by 20 NAERIC-member equine ranchers, for a total of $27,500. The sale average on 40 head was $688.75 - with the top five weanlings averaging $1,510, and the top ten averaging $1,150. While the averages were lower than the inaugural sale in 2008, they were better than anticipated given current economic conditions affecting the horse market.
The sale prices were realized, in part, as a result of the NAERIC Barrels of Cash marketing program developed by NAERIC-member equine ranchers. Consignors paid a $250 nomination fee for each weanling offered in the sale, making them eligible to compete at the 2014 NAERIC Barrels of Cash Futurity for a guaranteed purse of $9,000. The sale weanlings were also registered by their consignors with their respective breed associations, enrolled in the NAERIC AdvantageŽ program, and micro-chipped.
Only weanlings purchased through these annual Barrels of Cash Prospect Sales will be eligible to compete at future NAERIC Barrels of Cash Futurity events, which will be scheduled in conjunction with existing events.
The high selling weanling of the sale was Lot 845, BDB Jess Blazen, sired by Cer Jess Be Nimble, out of Blazen Dreams. The grey sorrel AQHA stallion was purchased by Chelsea Driedger of Virden for $2,000 and consigned by B=Ranch, Waskada, Manitoba.
Tom Bennie said, "B=Ranch is owned and operated in partnership with my parents, Tom & Sharlene Bennie, my sister and her husband, Scott and Rosalyn Lockie, and my wife and I (Tom Jr. & Tanis). We have been farming for three generations and began equine ranching in 1973. We breed and raise Belgian draft horses and racing American Quarter Horses, grain farm 3,000 acres, put up 640 acres of hay and have a small group of registered Red Angus cattle."
Bennie added, "Our racing Quarter Horse operation consists of three stallions and about 30 mares which is about 40% of our equine ranching contract."
"This colt, BDB Jess Blazen, is eligible for Quarter Horse flat-racing as a two-year-old including the Manitoba-bred Futurity in Winnipeg, and flat-racing Derbies as a three-year-old. After that, we expect he will continue on with either a flat-racing or a barrel racing career, and we hope to see him in the NAERIC Barrels of Cash Futurity as a five-year-old." said Bennie.
Chelsea Driedger, self-described farmer/horse trainer, said, "This is the first year that I have bought a colt. I really liked this colt`s paper as I`ve been running against a horse all year that`s bred similar to his sire, who`s number one in the Canadian Barrel Horse Futurity standings. I also liked this colt`s conformation; he has a strong hip. And, he`s a pretty laid-back colt. I`m planning to get him ready for the five-year-old futurities across Canada, including the 2014 Barrels of Cash Futurity."
Gordon and Brenda Adams of G & B Farms, of Virden, Manitoba consigned the second high selling weanling, Lot 845, GB French Lady, sired by Bill French, out of Ideal Lady Dakota. The palomino AQHA filly was purchased for $1,550 by Cassidy Gardiner of Virden, Manitoba.
Cassidy Gardiner, 12, is in Grade Seven at Virden Junior High School. She said, "I bought this filly because I really liked her, she is my favourite colour. So I think it was meant to be. I have been riding since I was two. This is my second year for High School Rodeo. I compete in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, and Breakaway Roping. This year I was in the top ten in Manitoba in Barrel Racing and Pole Bending."
"We also bought another weanling at this sale, (Lot 854) she`s a bay Quarter Horse filly, from Craig and Lore Frondall (Tacom Stables, of Neepawa, Manitoba). I`m hoping to start them both as two-year-olds, with help from my parents, (Rob and Karen) and get them ready for the Barrels of Cash Futurity when they are five."
Kirk and Gail Bridgeman of Bridgeman Land & Livestock, Rapid City, Manitoba, consigned the third high selling weanling, Lot 875, Money Cash Dash. sired by MRH Fancy Money, out of BB Dash Of Sweetness. Dennis MacNaught of Carnduff, Saskatchewan purchased this bay roan AQHA filly for $1,500.
Dennis and Sherree-Lee MacNaught are horse ranchers. Sheree-Lee said, "Actually, I bought this filly as a Christmas present for my husband (Dennis). This is the first time we have purchased a weanling through this sale. I really like her barrel racing bloodlines, and she is well put together. We hope to get her into all the futurities she is eligible for. Our daughter, Shasta, who is in Grade 11, competes in High School Rodeo, the Saskatchewan and Manitoba Barrel Racing Associations, and 4-H programs. We will likely get the filly started with the basic groundwork at home, and then send her elsewhere to get her fully broke. Then Shasta can start her on the barrels, and we hope she will take the filly into the 2014 Barrels of Cash Futurity and other barrel racing events."
Lot 861, DACS Lazer Moon, was the fourth high-selling weanling, purchased by Rachelle Boyes of Souris, Manitoba for $1,400. The sorrel AQHA colt, sired by Double Jac Moon, out of MJ Dry Doc Dixie was consigned by Duncan Campbell and Cathy Gerrand, of Virden, Manitoba.
Rachelle Boyes, who is a barrel horse trainer, said, "I`ve always liked Duncan and Cathy`s breeding program, and I know what I`m getting. Cathy rides the sire of the colt and is doing really well. This colt has a nice head and eye, as well as good conformation. He`s really put together well."
"I`ll probably break him to ride as a two- and three-year-old, get him started in barrels with light work as a four-year-old, and then take him to the Futurities as a five-year-old. I also bought another weanling colt at this sale (Lot 846) from Dallas and Sonja McGee (McGee Livestock of Deloraine, MB) and he`ll be brought along in the same way. I plan to bring both of these weanlings back to the 2014 Barrels of Cash Futurity," Boyes added.
The NAERIC Barrels of Cash Chair, Gail Bridgeman, said, "The consignors were pleased as our sale was well attended. There was a good crowd on hand, and we had several new buyers this year. We found there was lots of interest and the excitement is building towards our first Futurity event."
