| NAERIC Draft Horse Classic Sale & Futurity Moving to Royal Manitoba Winter Fair | | 1/19/2012 | | | 2012 Brings New Setting and Excitement to Tried, Tested and True Draft Horse Program.
The North American Equine Ranching Information Council (NAERIC), along with the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba, proudly announce the next generation of NAERIC Draft Horse Classic Sale and Futurity events. The sale and futurity will be moving to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair held at the Keystone Centre, in Brandon, Manitoba, in March 2012, after 10 years of world-class competitions and sales held at the Canadian Western Agribition, Regina, Saskatchewan.
Mark your calendars now for the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair held March 26-31, 2012, and the NAERIC Draft Horse Classic Sale & Futurity events. The Futurity will take place on March 29 & 30, 2012, and the Sale will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012. Sale yearlings will be eligible to compete as three-year-olds in the 2014 Futurity.
The NAERIC Draft Horse Classic Sale & Futurity celebrated its 10th anniversary in November, 2010. The richest draft horse futurity purse in all of North America, 2010 Futurity payouts amounted to a whopping $43,425.00 with the Futurity winner taking home $9,434.50! The 2012 Futurity purse will be worth $36,445.00, which is a testament to the event`s overriding success and support by Draft Horse Classic members and exhibitors. A Belgian stud colt, Creek Side Voo Doo, topped the 2010 Sale at $7,750.00.
The first sale was held in 2001 with 8 yearlings sold in that first year to start the rotation, and 17 weanling foals. The purpose of establishing the Futurity was to promote quality draft horses, to create entertainment value, and to provide an event that is beneficial to the draft horse industry.
"What other show can you go to with one horse and one cart and win that kind of money, even in 10th spot. Not even your six-horse hitch prize monies are paying like that," said Gord Ruzicka of Viking, Alberta, and long-time Draft Horse Classic Futurity exhibitor and committee member. "It is just a really great program and a good place for breeders to showcase the horses they raise."
A Percheron gelding owned and exhibited by Ruzicka was the winner of the 2010 NAERIC Draft Horse Classic Futurity, giving him his fifth win at the annual event. Ju-Ly Ige earned $7,352.00 for the first place finish, as well as $2,082.50 in Breeder`s Awards for breeders Lyle & Kathy Brown of Browns Percherons of Lenore, Manitoba, for a grand total of $9,434.50.
Lyle Brown, Co-chairman of the NAERIC Draft Horse Classic committee said, "The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair venue will be a perfect fit for the NAERIC Draft Horse Classic Sale & Futurity. This is one of western Canada`s largest agriculture events and the largest annual event to be held in Brandon, Manitoba. For horse enthusiasts, it offers world class show jumping and heavy horse competitions. The Fair`s philosophy compliments our events perfectly, both offering entertainment and education that benefits the entire agricultural community."
Karen Oliver, general manager of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba, is also excited about the new collaboration. "We are delighted to partner with the NAERIC Draft Horse Classic Sale & Futurity in 2012. We are looking forward to this new component at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair and are confident it will enhance the event for the horse enthusiasts out there."
Any draft horse breeder can become involved in the NAERIC Draft Horse Classic Futurity Sale by becoming a member. Foals bred by members are then eligible to be consigned and sold through the Futurity Sale. Yearlings purchased through the Sale are eligible to return as three-year olds to compete for the total Futurity purse.
